1. Nozzle and flow adjustment device (spear)
The nozzles are used to increase the kinetic energy of the water flow which will hit the vanes or blades attached to the runner.
The amount of water hitting the bucket is controlled by the spear. A spear is mounted inside the nozzle to regulate the flow of water that will hit the runner blades. The nozzle containing the spear is pictured below.
The spear is the conical needle in the nozzle. It is operated by handwheel or automatically in the axial direction.
When the spear is moved backward, the flow rate of the water increases, and when the spear is pushed forward, the flow rate of the water decreases.
2. Wheel and bucket
The runner is the rotating part of the turbine. It is a disc with a number of evenly spaced buckets fixed around its periphery.
The bucket is made from two hemispherical bowls joined together. Each bucket has a wall between the two hemispherical bowls, called a diverter.
The splitter splits the jet of water hitting the bucket into two equal parts, and the jet of water shoots out from the outer rim of the bucket.
The bucket is designed in such a way that the flow of water hits the bucket and deflects 160 to 170 degrees.
The blades of Pelton turbines are made of cast iron, cast steel, bronze or stainless steel.
3. Casing
It keeps water from splashing and helps drain water into the trail. It also acts as protection in case of any accident.
The casing of the 1000kw Pelton hydro-generator is cast iron or prefabricated steel plate.
4. Broken Jet
When the flow of water is completely shut off by pushing the spear forward, the amount of water hitting the runner becomes zero. But due to the runner's inertia, the runner continues to move.
In order to stop the runner in the shortest possible time, a small nozzle is provided that directs the water to the rear of the blade. This type of water jet used to stop the turbine wheel is called a break jet.
